The National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow Award is the United States Government’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.
The recipient of this award is regarded as a Living National Treasure – a person who possesses a high degree of knowledge and the skills required for performing or recreating specific elements of the intangible cultural heritage. In additon to recognition as a National Treasure the honoree is presented with the National Endowment for the Arts Medal.
